Kasey Schurtz is the principal of Cottonwood Elementary and 4-J Elementary in
Campbell County School District, Wyoming. His work focuses on instruction,
engagement, and building systems that protect students’ access to learning.
Kasey is also the co-host of Schurtz & Ties, where he and Brian Miller
think out loud with educators, researchers, school leaders, and cultural voices
about learning, engagement, leadership, and the human side of school.
His approach to leadership centers on clarity, consistency, and compassion.
He works to build sustainable systems, use meaningful and actionable data,
and translate complex ideas about teaching, learning, behavior, and intervention
into clear practices educators can actually use.
He believes strong schools are built by supporting and trusting the people doing
the work, creating conditions where teachers can succeed, and keeping learning
at the center of decisions.
His work emphasizes strong instruction, sustainable systems, meaningful intervention,
and the thoughtful use of data. Kasey is especially interested in translating complex
ideas about learning, engagement, behavior, and school improvement into clear,
usable practices that make a difference in classrooms.
Kasey’s leadership is grounded in the belief that schools improve when the people

he works to build a culture where teachers can focus on great instruction, students are
held to clear and compassionate expectations, and decisions remain centered on access
to learning.
